You are required to write a technical paper on one of the two topics described below (topic 1 or topic 2). The purpose of your paper is to provide a useful insight into your chosen topic at a level appropriate for an undergraduate student in Electronic Engineering who is new to the topic. Two options are offered to give you some choice, so please consider these carefully, select your preferred topic, and then start working on the paper. Topic 1: Describe how reliable communication can be provided in a wireless communication system. Your paper should: 1) Introduce the fundamental concepts and explain why reliable communication is often important. 2) Explain how reliable communication can be achieved, with emphasis on: i) error control coding and ii) automatic repeat request. 3) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of alternative approaches to providing reliable communication, including consideration of the requirements of different applications and the characteristics of different wireless channels. 4) Summarise your findings and draw conclusions about the provision of reliable communication in wireless systems. Topic 2: Describe how medium access control protocols are able to coordinate access to a shared communication channel. Your paper should: 1) Introduce the fundamental concepts and explain why temporal medium access control is important in wireless communication networks. 2) Describe alternative approaches to temporal medium access control, with emphasis on: i) contention-based techniques and ii) contention-free techniques. 3) Discuss the relative merits of contention-based and contention-free techniques, including their suitability with respect to the network topology and the quality of service requirements of different applications. 4) Summarise your findings and draw conclusions about alternative approaches to medium access control for wireless communication networks
