A‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍uthentic and Servant Leadership Approaches for Diversity and Inclusion The authentic leadership approach focuses on leaders as genuine, real, original, and ethical leaders who lead from conviction to promote diversity and inclusion. These leaders are often viewed as trustworthy, honest, and believable, and they tend to develop devoted supporters (Brouns et al., 2020). The servant leadership approach focuses on attending to the needs of workers, being empathetic, and nurturing. These two leadership approaches often blend into an authentic servant leader viewed as being more humanistic and caring to connect with, support, and motivate workers. Authentic and servant leadership approaches’ central focus is the leader and their actions towards others. The followers and stakeholders are integral in the process and benefit from their efficacy and self-less conduct. Both leadership methods are robust in the sense that their measurement is theory-based. Northouse (2021) clarified that authentic leadership operates in a moral dimension; the leaders do what is right for all stakeholders. Servant leaders’ central element is self-sacrifice, and the only leadership process built on caring for others (Brouns et al., 2020; Northouse, 2021). Servant leadership originated from Greenleaf’s writings (as cited in Northouse, 2021), and the approach is prescriptive and from a leader’s point of view and actions, which is like authentic leadership. A servant leader contributes an exclusive spin to leadership. An individual who is a servant leader serves primarily before having ambitions to lead (Focht & Ponton, 2015). Effective leaders incorporate servant leadership approaches. They value others, use discernment to make judgment-free decisions, demonstrate humility, care, integrity, service to others first before self, empower, collaborate long-term, love unreservedly, and learn from all stakeholders (Brouns et al., 2020; Focht & Ponton, 2015). Mother Teresa is an excellent example of a servant leader. She transformed her passion for serving people with unconditional love to expand the mission internationally. Another example of a servant and authentic leader is Helen Keller, one of the pioneers of special education. These people exemplify leaders who dedicated their lives to serving a more significant cause, a higher calling, thus being exceptional role models.
